Metalizing and Coatings
CQM's Vacuum Metalizing and Coatings (VM) Department applies metal and paint coatings on a variety of parts while retaining excellent adhesion. These coatings have both decorative and functional uses. They are used for reflective and cosmetic surfaces, as well as for RFI-EMI shielding of electronic enclosures.
Since 1993, we have used a proprietary process that gives us an edge: We do plasma etching, multiple coatings and vacuum metal deposition in one process. To do this, our VM department uses machines up to 24 inches (inside diameter) by 30 inches long. Flat parts up to 24 by 30 inches are processed through these coaters. Typically, every job requires specialized setup and work-holding tooling. Precision masking tooling is created to selectively mask areas that do not receive coatings. We have produced intricate 3-D masking tooling using sheet metal constructions, disposable plastic injection molded masks and also disposable vacuum-formed thin-skin coverings. We are very creative in our masking devices in order to minimize costs.
Using a UL-approved process, CQM can deposit up to eight microns (80,000 angstroms) of pure aluminum or other metals on many thermoplastics and thermoset surfaces. CQM's shielding has provided superior resistance readings which are less than 0.1 ohms of resistance over a 16- to 18-inch span checked point-to-point at a thickness of four microns or greater. The process enables good vertical side-wall coverage and similar resistivity readings. There is little to no thinning of the coating on outside sharp corners that is common with painted shielding.
CQM continues to invest heavily in its VM department and anticipates being able to apply coatings with the sputtering process and other technologies. In time, CQM will provide basic optical coatings such as filters, anti-reflection and dielectric reflectors. Our research indicates that the VM process is the most cost-effective. It is also environmentally friendly: VM does not generate hazardous waste or air pollutants. In addition, the coating can be easily removed from the surface at the time of discard to allow for recycling of the plastic material.
CQM strives to protect its work environment. Environmental and performance advantages favor VM over conventional plating processes. VM coatings are replacing contamination-prone electroplating materials. UV-cured paints are minimizing the VOFs associated with most solvent-based paints. CQM is investing in UV-curing equipment and UV-curable coatings to meet suggested emissions standards. We exceed the requirements of the local Clean Air Authority, which follows DEQ guidelines.
